Committing your life to Jesus Christ is the most significant decision a person ever makes - and it is a beginning, not a finish line. What follows are ten steps to walk, in order, at whatever pace the next season of your life allows. Nobody does all ten in a week. Everybody starts with the first one.
The Ten Steps
Read them through once. Then come back and take them one at a time - there is no prize for speed.
Seek Understanding
Take time to understand what it means to commit your life to Jesus Christ. Read the Bible and study His teachings, so that the core principles and values of the faith become yours rather than borrowed.
START IN THE GOSPELSAcknowledge Your Need for Salvation
Recognize that all have sinned and fallen short of God's standards, and that salvation is a gift from God offered through His Son - not a wage anyone earns.
ROMANS 3:23 · JOHN 3:16Repentance
Repentance means acknowledging your sins, feeling genuine remorse, and turning away from them. Confess before God and ask for forgiveness - He is faithful to give it.
1 JOHN 1:9Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior
Believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins. Invite Him into your heart as both Lord and Savior - both words, not one.
ROMANS 10:9Be Baptized
Baptism is your public declaration that the old life went under the water and a new one came up. Connect with a local church where you can be baptized among witnesses.
ACTS 2:38-39Seek Fellowship
Connect with other Christians who can support and guide you. Join a church or a hub where you can grow, be known, and find encouragement when the week is hard.
HEBREWS 10:25Cultivate a Prayer Life
Build a consistent practice of prayer - talking with God regularly rather than only in emergencies. Pray for guidance, strength, wisdom, and with thanksgiving.
PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7Study the Word
Read the Bible regularly to deepen your understanding of God's word. Start with the Gospels, where you meet Jesus' life, His teaching, and His example firsthand.
2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17Grow Through Discipleship
Find someone further along who will walk alongside you - a mentor close enough to ask you real questions. Learn from their experience and let them speak into yours.
2 TIMOTHY 2:2Live Out Your Faith
Let this commitment reach the ordinary parts of your life - your home, your work, your money, the way you treat people who can do nothing for you. That is where faith becomes visible.

The ten steps above are the path. These two are the ground underneath it - what we believe and why, and what the whole Bible actually says about the part of your life you are least likely to hand over.
Step six is the one most people skip.
